Difference between craft and art

Short answer

Rules set, or rules chosen.

Long answer

In art, you become the end user. You are the client. You set the rules. In design, the constraints are given to you by someone else. That is the only difference. But self-expression also requires channeling your ideas. If the world is so open, what do you pick up as constraint? You have to choose one idea that really sticks. You choose a medium, and within that medium you can only do so much. So essentially, you setting a rule versus someone else setting a rule. And yet, the danger of craft is that it is easy to be fascinated by it, and get stuck in it. A sculptor can spend two years perfecting a rolling pin with bearings, wonderfully well-adapted wood, a perfect balance. Technical solutions win the upper hand. Graphic and digital artists should be extra cautious.
