How should a design leader think?
Short answer
The surgeon runs the hospital.
Long answer
There is a trap that catches almost every talented designer who rises to lead. You were promoted because you could make beautiful, precise things. But leadership asks something else entirely. It asks you to make space for others to make beautiful things.
At scale, your hands leave the work. Your stakeholder meetings become your craft. You become, as one conversation put it, a PM with a design hat. That is not a demotion. It is a different discipline, and it deserves the same rigour.
The best design leaders I have heard describe understand two things clearly. First, that recognising raw talent is itself a skill. Second, that the best ideas rarely come from designers alone. They come from the room. Your job is to make that room worth being in.
