how to design web app

Short answer

Know the wall first.

Long answer

The deepest design insight I carry from these conversations is this: your user may only know how to make a phone call or send a WhatsApp message. That is the entire universe of their fluency. Designing beyond that is not sophistication, it is ignorance dressed as craft.

One story stays with me. An app was built with a spiritual touch, colours chosen with care, a whole visual language assembled. The person it was built for looked at it and said, what is this? I don't want this. I want exactly WhatsApp looking. And that was the real brief. The interface that works from grandmother to grandchild, with voice notes as a fallback for text, is not a compromise. It is the answer.

Frictionless is not a feature. It is the entire product. One OTP too many and you have lost them.
