How to desing a book?
Short answer
The container needs content first.
Long answer
A book is not a grid waiting to be filled. The form should emerge from what the content demands, not the other way around. One team working on a complex project discovered this over six months: they began with a sea of information and slowly realized that essays, interviews, quotes, and character stories each needed their own shape. The architecture revealed itself through the material. So before you open a layout program, ask: what kind of knowing does this book carry? Is it reflective, argumentative, visual, intimate? Let that answer drive your structure. And then, keep making. Iterate the pages as you would a sketch.
