How to kickstart filmmaking

Short answer

Press record. Then wonder why.

Long answer

The most honest thing I've heard about starting any creative practice is this: don't begin with a destination in mind. Begin to find something. The learning that comes from making is worth more than the project itself, more than the fees, more than the praise.

What stops most first-time filmmakers isn't lack of equipment or opportunity. It's the need to know what they're making before they make it. But the work teaches you what the work is about.

The only real mentor you'll have, eventually, is your own criticality. Learn to look at your own footage honestly. That internal, unflinching gaze is what separates someone who made one film from someone who keeps making them.
