What is Design?

Short answer

A stone dropped in water.

Long answer

Design is not a discipline. It is a way of being alive to the world. It begins before the brief and continues long after the object is made. Think of planting a sapling with the dream of shade you will never fully predict. That is design. It evolves, surprises, transforms.

Cave paintings were not made for beauty. They were made to tell a story. The goal was never prettification but meaning. When the message lands across thousands of years, the design has worked.

Design combines senses, mediums, and time. It tickles, disturbs, and occasionally devastates. At its core, it asks a simple question: what is the consequence of what I am making, and is that consequence worth making?
