What is order and why do we need it?
Short answer
Chaos already has structure.
Long answer
Order is not the opposite of complexity. It is the grammar that makes complexity legible. In product design, every constraint — material, cost, manufacturing process — is a form of order. The discipline of choosing which process, at what cost, for what function is not a limitation on creativity. It is the creative act itself.
Think of IKEA's flat-pack logic: shipping costs and absent labour shaped an entire design language. The constraint became the aesthetic. A chai maker that avoids plastic and uses laser-etched metal parts tells you that order emerges from honest reckoning with reality.
We need order not because chaos is wrong, but because without it, nothing can be held, carried, or passed on.
