Why should engineers learn design?
Short answer
The bridge needs both banks.
Long answer
Design was created, as one voice in these conversations put it, to intervene in the real world of things people need. That is its fundamental goal. Engineers already live in that world. They build the things people depend on. But building something that works is only the second layer. The first layer is how it looks and feels. The third, deeper layer is whether the whole experience has become better. Whether it changes something for good. Engineers who understand design begin asking not just whether something functions, but whether it delights, whether it reduces friction, whether it serves the person at the centre. The filter is simple: does it work and does it look good? A no on either means revisit.
